What is a NEF file?
NEF is Nikon's proprietary RAW image format, introduced in 1999 alongside the Nikon D1. It stores the unprocessed output straight from the camera sensor, along with camera settings, lens data, and a small embedded JPEG preview. Photographers use NEF files when they want full control over how the final image is developed.
NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format. The file holds raw Bayer-pattern sensor data at 12 or 14 bits per channel, which gives far more tonal range than an 8-bit JPEG. White balance, sharpening, noise reduction, and tone curves are saved as instruction sets inside the file rather than baked into the pixel data. That means you can change those settings repeatedly during editing without touching the original capture.
History
Nikon released the NEF format in 1999 with the Nikon D1, one of the first digital SLRs adopted widely by news photographers. The D1 recorded 12-bit compressed NEF files on CompactFlash cards. Over the following decades Nikon expanded the format to support 14-bit capture, lossless compression, and multiple embedded preview sizes as sensor resolutions grew.
How it works
NEF uses a standard TIFF file header, making it recognizable to TIFF-aware software, but extends it with Nikon-specific MakerNote tags that most general tools cannot decode. A typical NEF contains at least two sub-image directories: one holds a full-size lossy JPEG preview for quick display, and the other holds the actual RAW sensor data in uncompressed or losslessly compressed form. The compression algorithm Nikon uses for lossless mode is bit-perfect, so the decompressed data is identical to what the sensor recorded.

How to open it
NEF files open natively in Nikon's own NX Studio software, as well as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, and RawTherapee. Windows users can install the free Nikon NEF Codec to get thumbnails and previews in File Explorer without a dedicated photo app.

Can I open a NEF file on Windows without installing extra software?
You need the free Nikon NEF Codec for thumbnail previews in File Explorer. To actually edit the file you also need a RAW-capable app such as NX Studio, Lightroom, or RawTherapee.
Is NEF the same as NRW?
No. NRW is a separate Nikon RAW format used by some Nikon Coolpix compact cameras. NEF is used on Nikon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Both are TIFF-based, but they have different internal structures.
Does converting NEF to JPEG lose quality?
Converting to JPEG always discards the extra bit depth and applies irreversible compression. The original NEF file stays untouched, so you can keep it as a backup and re-export at any time.
What is the difference between 12-bit and 14-bit NEF?
14-bit NEF records more tonal steps per channel (16,384 vs 4,096), which means smoother gradients and more detail when recovering highlights or lifting shadows in post. The trade-off is a larger file and slightly slower write speed to the memory card.
