A Word document should be a lightweight thing — yet anyone who has emailed a report knows how often a .docx swells to tens of megabytes. The culprit is almost never the text: it is the images. Screenshots pasted straight from the clipboard, photos inserted at full camera resolution, scanned signatures saved as enormous PNGs — Word keeps them all at original size inside the file. Under the hood, a DOCX file is a ZIP archive built on the Office Open XML standard. The document body is compact XML; embedded pictures live in the word/media/ folder and typically account for the vast majority of the file size. The compressor opens the archive, re-encodes each JPEG and PNG with quality-tuned encoding, downscales images that are far larger than the page will ever render them, removes redundant data, and repacks everything with maximum deflate compression. Your text, formatting, styles, headers and footers, tables, tracked changes, comments, and embedded fonts come through untouched.

Three compression levels, one honest rule. The Low setting never touches your images at all — it only repacks the ZIP container with stronger deflate compression, making it fully lossless. Medium re-encodes images at high quality for a balance most documents never visibly show. High pushes quality tuning and downscaling further for the smallest output, well suited to documents headed for email or long-term storage.

And the honest rule: if recompression cannot beat the original — common when a document is already text-only or its images were optimized before insertion — the tool returns your original file unchanged rather than shipping you a larger one. Older .doc files from Word 97–2003 are automatically upgraded to .docx first, then compressed.

Everything happens over HTTPS in an isolated server-side directory, and files auto-delete within two hours — or instantly with the Delete File Now button on the download card.
