M1V is the MPEG-1 Video elementary stream — raw video from the 1993 standard at VCD resolution (352x240/288) without container, audio, or metadata. The Xbox Video device preset targets Microsoft's Xbox consoles (Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S), producing H.264 High Profile video with AAC-LC audio optimized for TV-connected display via the Xbox media player app.
Displaying VCD-resolution content on a living room TV through Xbox is an unusual use case, but it serves archival viewing purposes. The H.264 High Profile encoding produces the cleanest possible output from the low-resolution source, and the Xbox's TV scaler handles the upscaling to fit the display.
Xbox consoles cannot play raw MPEG-1 elementary streams — no Xbox media player app recognizes the M1V format. The Xbox preset converts to H.264 High Profile MP4, which plays reliably across Xbox 360 (with codec updates), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The preset adds the container structure and codec compatibility that Xbox requires.
For family archival viewing — old home videos captured to VCD, legacy educational content, or vintage recordings — the Xbox provides a convenient shared screen. While the VCD resolution looks soft on a large TV, it serves the purpose of group viewing for content that would otherwise be completely inaccessible.
FFmpeg reads the M1V elementary stream, decodes MPEG-1 video, and re-encodes to H.264 High Profile Level 4.1 at the source resolution (352x240 or 352x288). Video bitrate targets 1-2 Mbps. The MP4 container includes faststart for USB and streaming compatibility. No audio is included unless an external source is muxed in. The Xbox's display scaler upscales the low resolution to fit the connected TV.
H.264 High Profile at 1-2 Mbps produces the cleanest possible encoding of VCD-resolution content. On a large TV, the 352x240 source is inherently soft — this is a source limitation, not a conversion issue. The Xbox's scaler applies TV-appropriate upscaling that looks better than most software players' default scaling. Muxed audio at 192 kbps AAC sounds clean through the TV speakers or sound bar.
