About video files
Common video formats include MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, WMV, FLV, M4V, 3GP, MPEG, and MTS. Many cameras, phones, screen recorders, and older devices save video in these formats. Not every player, TV, or website accepts them. MP4 is widely supported and can be shared.
People convert these files to MP4 to make them play on more devices, to send smaller files, or to prepare video for the web. The hub can copy streams when possible or re-encode them to H.264 video and AAC audio. This gives a standard MP4 file that starts playing before it finishes downloading.
How we convert video to other formats
- Copy when possible
- For MOV, MKV, M4V, and MTS, the hub can copy compatible streams into MP4 without re-encoding when you change no option. Picture quality stays the same.
- Re-encode fallback
- If streams cannot go into MP4, or for AVI, WebM, WMV, FLV, 3GP, and MPEG, the hub re-encodes video to H.264 High profile at CRF 23 and audio to AAC at 192 kbps.
- Resolution and frame rate
- Kept from the source unless you pick new values. The hub never upscales. Odd widths or heights are padded by one pixel because H.264 needs even numbers.
- Quality presets
- High (CRF 18), Medium (CRF 23), and Low (CRF 28) let you trade size for detail. Lower resolution cuts size more than any other setting.
- Web playback
- The MP4 index is placed at the start of the file, so the MP4 starts to play before it finishes downloading.
Common problems and fixes
The MP4 plays on one device but not on another.
The source may use H.265 or another codec that the device cannot decode. Before you convert video files, choose a quality preset: High, Medium, or Low. That forces video files to re-encode to H.264, which almost every player can open.
The MP4 has no sound on my TV.
Some source files carry a surround or lossless audio codec that your TV cannot decode. Set an audio bitrate or choose a quality preset so the audio in your video files is re-encoded to AAC.
The file is too large to send.
Choose the Medium or Low preset, or set 1080p or 720p. On the video-converter page, lowering the resolution reduces the size of video files more than any other setting.
