About PPT to ODP Conversion
PPT is Microsoft's proprietary binary presentation format from the 1997-2003 era. ODP (OpenDocument Presentation) is the open ISO standard (ISO 26300) for presentations, used natively by LibreOffice Impress and Apache OpenOffice Impress. Converting PPT to ODP migrates a legacy proprietary presentation to the open standard, simultaneously modernizing the format and liberating it from vendor lock-in.
This conversion preserves the presentation's slide structure, text content, basic animations, and images while repackaging everything in ODP's XML-based ZIP archive. The result is an editable presentation that can be opened, modified, and presented in any ODF-compliant software.
Why Convert PPT to ODP?
Government open-format mandates in multiple countries require ODP for official presentations. Organizations that receive legacy PPT files but must maintain them in open formats need this conversion for compliance. Converting PPT to ODP ensures these presentations remain accessible using free, open-source software without any Microsoft licensing dependency.
ODP conversion also future-proofs legacy PPT files. PPT is an aging binary format with declining support in newer software — each new version of LibreOffice or PowerPoint may render old PPT files slightly differently. Converting to ODP's well-documented XML standard ensures the content remains accessible and faithfully renderable far into the future.
Common Use Cases
- Migrate legacy PPT archives to open format for government compliance
- Edit old PPT presentations natively in LibreOffice Impress
- Future-proof PPT presentations by converting to a well-documented open standard
- Share presentations with organizations that require or prefer ODP format
- Reduce dependency on Microsoft Office for viewing and editing older presentations
How It Works
LibreOffice parses the PPT binary using its PowerPoint import filter, reconstructing slides, text frames, drawing objects, animations, and embedded media from the OLE2 compound file. The presentation is then serialized as ODP: slides become <draw:page> elements, text frames become <draw:text-box>, shapes use ODF drawing primitives, and images are stored in the Pictures/ directory of the ZIP archive. PPT animations (entrance, emphasis, exit effects) are translated to ODP's SMIL-based animation model where equivalents exist. The output is ODF 1.2 compliant.
Quality & Performance
Text, basic shapes, images, and standard animations convert well. PPT-era presentations used simpler features than modern PPTX, so the conversion is generally reliable. AutoShapes and basic clip art render correctly. Sound effects attached to animations may not transfer. Embedded OLE objects (like Excel charts) are converted to static images. The visual design — backgrounds, color schemes, and text formatting — is preserved with good fidelity.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Test the ODP in LibreOffice Impress after conversion to verify animations and layout
- 2Convert all legacy PPT archives to ODP as a one-time migration for long-term preservation
- 3Keep the original PPT files as a backup during the migration process
- 4Review embedded objects (charts, spreadsheets) since they are converted to static images
- 5Update any outdated content while editing the newly converted ODP
