About document files
People share documents as PDF because the layout stays the same. But PDF files are hard to edit. Converting a PDF to Word gives editable paragraphs, tables and images. Converting a PDF to Excel turns detected tables into rows and columns. Converting a PDF to JPG or PNG turns pages into images for websites, email or print.
Image formats also matter in documents. PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency. JPG is smaller but cannot be transparent. WebP can be smaller than both and keeps transparency. ICO holds favicon sizes. PPTX to PDF turns slides into a static PDF. These conversions help you edit, share, shrink or prepare files for different uses.
How we convert document to other formats
- Editable output
- PDF to Word rebuilds paragraphs, tables and images into editable Word content. PDF to Excel writes detected tables into rows and columns.
- Page rendering
- PDF to JPG and PDF to PNG render pages at 300 DPI by default, with 72, 150, 300 and 600 DPI choices. Multi-page PDFs give a ZIP.
- Image conversion
- PNG to JPG uses quality 85 and flattens transparency. JPG to PNG is lossless. PNG and JPG to WebP use quality 85 with a lossless option. PNG to ICO holds 16, 32 and 48 pixel sizes.
- Scanned PDFs
- PDF to Word treats a PDF as a scan if it has fewer than 50 text characters per page on average, then runs text recognition at 300 DPI for up to 50 pages.
- Slides
- PPTX to PDF renders each slide as one PDF page with compression options and a page size option.
Common problems and fixes
The Word file shows the pages but I cannot select the text.
The PDF is probably a scan with more than 50 pages. Text recognition runs on the first 50 scanned pages only. Split the PDF document file into parts of 50 pages or fewer and convert each part.
The sheet shows lines of text instead of a table.
The PDF has no table structure that we can detect. Use Text to Columns in Excel to split the lines into cells.
The logo lost its transparent background.
JPG cannot be transparent. For document files, keep the logo as PNG or convert it to WebP, which supports transparency.
