WMV and AVI are both Microsoft video formats from different eras. WMV uses the ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container with VC-1 or WMV2 codecs, designed for streaming and DRM. AVI (Audio Video Interleave, 1992) uses the RIFF structure and is a simple, universally recognized container that works with virtually any editing software and media player. Converting WMV to AVI moves content from Microsoft's streaming format to its simpler, more compatible container — useful for legacy editing software, hardware players, and systems that support AVI but not ASF.
Some video editing applications (especially older versions of VirtualDub, Avidemux, and Windows Movie Maker) work natively with AVI but cannot import WMV/ASF files. Hardware media players and set-top boxes from the pre-streaming era often support AVI (with DivX/XviD) but not WMV. Converting to AVI also strips any Windows Media DRM that might be present, producing an unprotected file (from DRM-free sources only).
FFmpeg decodes the VC-1/WMV2 video and WMA audio from the ASF container, then re-encodes to MPEG-4 Part 2 (DivX/XviD compatible) or H.264 for video, and MP3 or PCM for audio, wrapping the result in AVI's RIFF container. If H.264-in-AVI is acceptable (some players support it), a remux is possible when the WMV contains H.264. AVI's RIFF structure has a 2 GB file size limit in the original spec, extended to 256 GB with AVI 2.0/OpenDML.
When re-encoding to MPEG-4 Part 2, quality depends on the target bitrate — at 2–4 Mbps, it is comparable to the original WMV. When encoding to H.264, quality typically improves versus VC-1 at the same bitrate. If the WMV has high bitrate VC-1, match or exceed that bitrate in the AVI output to avoid visible quality loss.

WMV to AVI conversion produces a universally compatible file for legacy systems and editing software. While AVI lacks WMV's streaming features, its simplicity and universal support make it the right choice for offline playback and editing workflows.
