Converting Kodak K25 RAW files to JPEG is the most practical way to make these orphaned 1996-era photographs usable in modern workflows. JPEG is understood by every device, operating system, email client, and social media platform in existence. For the DC25's 493x373 pixel captures, JPEG produces files of just 15-40 KB at high quality — small enough to email, text, or post anywhere without any concern for file size limits.
The DC25 was sold with Kodak PhotoEnhancer software that could export K25 files as JPEG on Windows 95/98, but that software is now extinct. This conversion provides the same outcome using modern server-side processing: the K25 RAW data is decoded, demosaiced, and compressed into a standard JPEG file that works everywhere.
JPEG is the universal language of digital photographs. Converting K25 to JPEG makes these files work in iCloud Photo Library, Google Photos, Windows Photos, Facebook, Instagram, and every other photo platform. For people rediscovering old CompactFlash cards from the late 1990s, JPEG conversion is the fastest path from forgotten K25 files to viewable, shareable photographs.
Unlike BMP or PNG, JPEG files are compact enough to store thousands of converted DC25 photographs in negligible disk space. Even at maximum quality settings, a K25-to-JPEG conversion produces a file under 100 KB. This makes JPEG the obvious choice for bulk conversion of K25 photo libraries for everyday use.
The K25 file is decoded by parsing the proprietary Kodak RAW structure, extracting the CCD sensor data, and performing Bayer pattern demosaicing. Color correction is applied based on available camera calibration data. The full-color RGB image is then compressed using JPEG baseline encoding with configurable quality (default 92%). The DCT-based compression is highly efficient at the DC25's low resolution, producing extremely small output files. EXIF metadata is generated with available capture information.
At quality 90-95%, the JPEG output is virtually indistinguishable from the uncompressed original at the DC25's 493x373 resolution. The camera's inherent softness and limited dynamic range mean that JPEG compression artifacts are imperceptible. Even quality 80% produces acceptable results because the low resolution contains little fine detail for compression to destroy. There is no practical reason to use quality below 90% for K25 files — the space savings would be measured in kilobytes.

K25 to JPEG is the essential conversion for making Kodak DC25 photographs usable in the modern world, producing tiny, universally compatible files from these historically significant but otherwise inaccessible early digital captures.
