About image files
Common image formats on this hub are HEIC, JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF. JPG cannot store transparency. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. WebP and AVIF can make smaller files than PNG or JPG. HEIC files come from phone cameras and can store GPS data.
People convert images to open them in programs that need JPG or PNG, to keep or remove transparency, or to reduce file size. A PNG can be much larger than a JPG or WebP. JPG cannot store transparency, so a PNG or WebP may be needed. Converting does not add detail, so people start from the best source they have.
How we convert image to other formats
- Output formats
- JPG uses quality 85, progressive, optimized JPEG encoder. PNG is lossless with compression level 9. WebP is lossy at quality 85, encoding effort 4 of 6, with a lossless option.
- Size
- We keep the original pixel size. We do not enlarge unless you change that option.
- Transparency
- PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot store transparency. Flatten fills transparent areas with a color you choose, white by default.
- Colors
- Full color by default. Palette reduction only if you turn it on.
- Orientation and metadata
- We apply stored rotation. EXIF data stays unless you choose to remove it.
Common problems and fixes
The converted file is much larger than the source.
This is normal when converting to PNG or JPG from HEIC, AVIF, or WebP. PNG is lossless and needs more bytes. Use JPG for photos or lower the quality if size matters more.
Transparent areas get a solid background or look wrong.
JPG cannot store transparency. Turn on flatten and choose a background color, or convert to PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
The image looks soft, blurry, or has artifacts.
Converting does not add detail or remove existing artifacts. Start from the largest or best source you have. For small text or thin lines, keep PNG or use lossless WebP.
