PostScript describes page content through a vector-based programming language with mathematical precision — curves, lines, text, and images are defined by coordinates and equations rather than pixels. GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a raster image format supporting up to 256 colors with lossless compression and optional transparency. GIF is widely used for simple graphics, logos, icons, and animated sequences across the web.
Converting PS to GIF rasterizes a PostScript page into a lightweight, web-friendly image with a limited but efficient color palette. This conversion is useful for creating web graphics, thumbnails, and simple visual previews from PostScript artwork, particularly for line art, diagrams, and graphics that don't require photographic color depth.
PostScript files cannot be displayed on the web or in most modern applications. Converting to GIF creates a compact, universally viewable image that works in every browser, messaging app, and presentation tool. GIF's 256-color palette and lossless compression are well-suited for PostScript content that consists of line art, text, diagrams, and flat-color graphics — the types of content most commonly found in technical and professional PostScript files.
GIF is also the only widely supported image format that supports simple frame-based animation. For multi-page PostScript files, each page can become a frame in an animated GIF, creating a quick flipbook-style preview of the entire document.
Ghostscript interprets the PostScript program, rendering all vector operations, text, and images into a rasterized bitmap at the specified resolution. The bitmap is then quantized to GIF's 256-color palette using dithering algorithms to approximate colors outside the palette. The quantized image is compressed using GIF's LZW lossless compression. For multi-page PostScript files, each page can be rendered as a separate GIF or combined into an animated GIF with configurable frame delay. Transparency is supported for single-color transparent backgrounds. The rasterization resolution is configurable from screen quality (72 DPI) to print quality (300 DPI).
GIF output is lossless for images within its 256-color palette limit. PostScript content with flat colors, line art, and text converts excellently to GIF with sharp edges and clean rendering. Photographic content and smooth gradients in the PostScript will show visible color banding and dithering artifacts due to the 256-color limitation. For PostScript files with complex color gradients or photographic images, PNG or JPEG provides much better output quality. GIF is optimal for simple, flat-color PostScript graphics.

PS-to-GIF conversion produces compact, web-ready images from PostScript page descriptions — ideal for line art, diagrams, and simple graphics where the 256-color palette is sufficient.
