Samsung NX-series cameras produced SRW RAW files with 14-bit APS-C sensors delivering excellent image quality for their era. The NX1 was particularly notable with a 28.2 MP BSI CMOS sensor, 4K video, and Samsung's advanced autofocus system. JPEG is the universal photograph format. Samsung NX photographers need JPEG for sharing, printing, web publishing, and social media — none of which accept SRW directly. JPEG conversion is essential for any practical use of Samsung NX camera output.
Long-term preservation is also a concern. Samsung's SRW format may eventually lose support in RAW processors. While DNG is ideal for RAW archival, JPEG provides a universally readable interpretation that will work in any software for decades to come.
Reads the SRW container, extracts 14-bit Bayer data from Samsung's APS-C sensor, applies Samsung's color matrix and white balance, performs demosaicing, and compresses to JPEG at configurable quality (default 92%). Samsung's color rendering — known for slightly warm, pleasing tones — is preserved in the JPEG output. EXIF metadata including Samsung lens data transfers.
At 92% quality, JPEG preserves the character of Samsung's color rendering. The NX1's BSI CMOS sensor produced excellent detail and low noise for its era. The main limitation is the 14-bit to 8-bit reduction. Samsung's color science was well-regarded, and the JPEG output preserves this rendering faithfully.
