3GP stores audio as AMR (narrow-band at 8 kHz, 4.75-12.2 kbps) or AAC within the 3GPP mobile container. WAV (Waveform Audio File Format), co-developed by Microsoft and IBM in 1991, stores uncompressed PCM audio data — the raw digital representation of sound. Converting 3GP to WAV extracts the audio stream, decodes it completely, and stores the raw samples in the most universally compatible uncompressed audio format available.
WAV is the universal input format for audio editing, mastering, analysis, and processing. Every audio editor (Audacity, Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, FL Studio, Reaper), speech recognition system, forensic audio tool, and scientific analysis software accepts WAV without question. Unlike FLAC or ALAC, WAV requires zero codec support — it is raw PCM data with a simple header, making it the safest choice when you do not know what software will process the audio next.
FFmpeg extracts the audio from the 3GP container, decodes AMR or AAC to raw PCM, and writes it to a WAV file with a standard RIFF header. The output format is typically 16-bit signed integer PCM at the source sample rate (8 kHz for AMR-NB, 16 kHz for AMR-WB, or the AAC sample rate). Channel count is preserved (mono for AMR). The WAV header specifies format, sample rate, bit depth, and data size, ensuring universal compatibility.
WAV stores uncompressed PCM — it is a perfect, lossless representation of the decoded audio. Quality is limited only by the 3GP source: AMR-NB produces telephone-quality audio (300-3400 Hz), AMR-WB gives wideband speech (50-7000 Hz), and AAC preserves its original frequency range. WAV adds no artifacts, compression, or quality changes.
