AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is Microsoft's older container format, predating ASF and widely supported by desktop media players and video editing software. While both ASF and AVI are Microsoft formats, ASF was designed for streaming with features like DRM and server-side seeking, whereas AVI is a simpler, more universally compatible container. Converting ASF to AVI strips the streaming-specific features and repackages the media in a format understood by virtually every video player and editor.
Despite being from the same company, ASF and AVI serve different purposes. Many video editors (especially older versions of Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, and VirtualDub) open AVI files readily but struggle with ASF containers. AVI is also the standard container for DivX/XviD content and is expected by certain hardware DVD players. If your ASF files are causing compatibility issues in editing software, AVI is often the simplest fix.
The conversion demuxes the ASF container, extracting video and audio elementary streams. For maximum compatibility, video can be re-encoded to DivX/XviD (MPEG-4 Part 2) or kept as WMV if the player supports it. Audio is typically transcoded to MP3 or PCM. The AVI container uses a simple RIFF-based structure with an index chunk for seeking. Unlike ASF, AVI does not support variable bitrate seeking natively, so CBR encoding is recommended.
If the video is remuxed without re-encoding (WMV stream placed directly into AVI), quality is identical to the source. If transcoding to DivX/XviD is required, there is a small quality loss typical of any re-encoding. Audio transcoded from WMA to MP3 at an equal or higher bitrate preserves perceived quality.
