FFmpeg demuxes the M2TS transport stream, decodes the audio track (AC3/DTS/LPCM) to raw PCM, and writes it into the AIFF container. Output defaults to 24-bit/48 kHz for Blu-ray sources (matching the typical Blu-ray audio specification) or 16-bit/48 kHz for AVCHD. Multi-channel content can be preserved as multi-channel AIFF or downmixed to stereo. LPCM tracks from Blu-ray transfer to AIFF with zero quality loss since both are uncompressed PCM.
When extracting from LPCM Blu-ray tracks, quality is bit-perfect — identical to the disc master. From AC3/DTS, the AIFF represents the fully decoded audio at maximum fidelity. Since AC3 and DTS are lossy, the AIFF cannot exceed their quality ceiling, but it prevents any further degradation during editing. 24-bit depth preserves the full dynamic range of film soundtracks.
