M4A is the standard file extension for audio-only MPEG-4 files, used by Apple for iTunes Store purchases, Apple Music, voice recordings, and GarageBand exports. M4A files typically contain AAC or ALAC audio in the MP4 container. RM (RealMedia) files from the late 1990s store audio using RealNetworks' proprietary codecs — primarily Cook (RA8) for general audio and ACELP variants for low-bitrate speech — encoded at 32-96 kbps for dial-up streaming.
Converting RM to M4A extracts the audio from the RM container and re-encodes it as AAC in the M4A wrapper. This transforms obsolete RealAudio content into Apple's native audio format, enabling immediate playback on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and through iTunes and Apple Music.
M4A is Apple's standard audio format — every Apple device and application handles it natively. RealAudio codecs have no support on any Apple platform and never did (even the old RealPlayer for Mac was a separate application, not system-integrated). Converting RM to M4A is the most direct path to making legacy RealAudio content playable in the Apple ecosystem.
Beyond Apple compatibility, M4A with AAC encoding is supported on Android, Windows, web browsers, and virtually all modern devices. AAC at equivalent bitrates sounds better than the original RealAudio codec, so while the source quality limits the output, the M4A file will be as good as the source allows in a universally compatible format.
FFmpeg demuxes the RM container and decodes the RealAudio stream (Cook, ACELP, or other legacy codec) to PCM. The audio is then encoded to AAC-LC at 128 kbps VBR in an M4A (MP4 audio) container. Sample rate is preserved from the source — typically 22.05 kHz or 44.1 kHz. The M4A container supports full metadata (title, artist, album, artwork) and chapter markers, all of which can be added after conversion.
AAC encoding at 128 kbps preserves the full quality of the decoded RM audio without further degradation. The source quality is inherently limited — RealAudio at 32-96 kbps from the dial-up era produces narrow-band audio with audible compression artifacts. The M4A output faithfully represents this quality. For speech-only RM content, 64 kbps AAC in M4A is more than sufficient and produces very compact files.
