WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio in Microsoft's RIFF container at roughly 10 MB per minute for CD-quality stereo. WMA (Windows Media Audio) is Microsoft's proprietary audio codec family, introduced in 1999 as part of the Windows Media framework. WMA Standard is a lossy codec competitive with MP3, while WMA Pro supports multichannel surround and higher sample rates, and WMA Lossless provides bit-perfect compression.
Converting WAV to WMA produces compact audio files optimized for Windows ecosystems. WMA was the default music format for Windows Media Player, Zune, and early Windows Phone devices, and remains supported across all Windows versions.
WMA Standard delivers audio quality comparable to or better than MP3 at the same bitrate, particularly at lower bitrates (64-96 kbps) where it produces cleaner results. For Windows-centric environments — corporate intranets, Windows Media Player deployments, legacy Windows Phone libraries — WMA is the native format with guaranteed compatibility.
WMA also supports DRM (Digital Rights Management) through the Windows Media DRM framework, which was widely used by music stores and enterprise content distribution systems. If you are working within a legacy Windows DRM ecosystem or maintaining compatibility with older Windows devices, WMA is the required format.
FFmpeg encodes the WAV PCM data using the wmav2 codec (WMA version 2) into an ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container. WMA uses a modified discrete cosine transform similar to MP3 and AAC but with Microsoft's proprietary psychoacoustic model. Standard output bitrates range from 48 to 192 kbps for WMA Standard. The ASF container supports metadata through Windows Media attributes including title, artist, album, genre, and album art.
WMA Standard at 128 kbps produces quality comparable to MP3 at 128 kbps, with some listeners preferring WMA's handling of high frequencies. At 192 kbps, WMA Standard approaches transparent quality for casual listening. At 64 kbps, WMA is noticeably better than MP3 at the same bitrate. WMA Lossless (if the target supports it) preserves every sample from the WAV at roughly 50% compression, similar to FLAC and ALAC.

WAV to WMA is the appropriate conversion for Windows-native audio workflows. WMA Standard provides competitive quality at common bitrates, with the advantage of deep integration across all Windows platforms.
