About audio files
Common audio formats include WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG, WMA, Opus, AIFF and MP3. People convert audio when a device or app cannot play a file. For example, iOS has little support for OGG but plays MP3. Old car stereos may only accept 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz MP3. Converting changes the file to a format more tools accept.
Converting can also prepare audio for a task. A phone system or voice menu may need a mono WAV at a set sample rate. A ringtone may need a short M4A clip. A voice memo may need a smaller mono MP3. The tools on this hub let you change format, sample rate, channels, bitrate, tags and loudness before you convert.
How we convert audio to other formats
- Default MP3 output
- Variable bitrate at quality level 2, about 190 kbps on average. Fixed bitrate is available if a device or site needs a specific rate such as 128 or 320 kbps.
- Sample rate and channels
- Kept from the source unless you choose a new sample rate or switch to mono. Common choices include 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz and 96 kHz.
- Tags and cover art
- For MP3 and M4A output, you can set title, artist, album, year and genre. Embedded cover art can carry over into MP3 and M4A.
- Clean-up and editing
- Normalize, volume, trim, fade in, fade out and noise reduction are available before conversion.
- Other output formats
- MP3 to WAV outputs 16-bit PCM WAV. MP3 to M4A outputs AAC at 192 kbps inside an M4A container.
Common problems and fixes
The converted file is too large.
For speech audio files, set a lower bitrate such as 128 kbps or switch to mono. For audio files, a mono voice recording at a low bitrate stays clear and is much smaller.
The recording is too quiet after conversion.
Turn on normalize. For audio files, this raises the level of the whole file so the loudest part reaches a safe peak.
The converted file does not sound better than the source.
That is expected. Converting cannot add detail that was not in the source. When converting audio files, choose a bitrate close to the source to avoid a larger file with the same sound.
