WMV uses Microsoft's ASF container with VC-1 or WMV2 codecs and WMA audio. MKV (Matroska Video) is the open-source container that supports virtually every codec ever created — H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1, VC-1, DTS, FLAC, and hundreds more. MKV also supports unlimited audio tracks, subtitle tracks (SRT, SSA, VobSub), chapters, and attachments. Converting WMV to MKV can be a zero-loss remux (since MKV accepts VC-1) or a full transcode to modern codecs.
MKV provides features that ASF/WMV cannot: embedded subtitles in multiple languages, multiple audio tracks, chapter markers, and broad media server support (Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi). For transcoding, video is re-encoded to H.264 or H.265 and audio to AAC, FLAC, or Opus. MKV's EBML-based structure supports rich metadata, ordered chapters, and segment linking. Additional subtitle (.srt, .ass) and audio tracks can be muxed in during conversion.
Remuxing preserves the exact original quality — every bit of video and audio data is identical to the WMV source. Transcoding quality depends on the target codec and settings. H.264 at CRF 18–20 in MKV produces excellent results, typically exceeding the visual quality of VC-1 at equivalent file sizes.
