WTV files are completely unplayable on Android — no Android media player recognizes the WTV container or its NTFS-like internal structure. The preset also handles the technical complexities automatically — deinterlacing broadcast 1080i content, downmixing 5.1 AC3 surround to stereo, and selecting appropriate bitrates for mobile viewing. This produces files that play smoothly even on mid-range Android hardware without stuttering or battery drain from inefficient decoding.
FFmpeg demuxes the WTV container, extracts the MPEG-2 or H.264 video and AC3 or AAC audio streams. The Android preset applies H.264 Baseline Profile Level 3.1 encoding at up to 720p resolution with a target bitrate of 2-4 Mbps. Audio is re-encoded to AAC-LC stereo at 128 kbps. Interlaced 1080i and 480i sources are deinterlaced with yadif before scaling. The output MP4 container uses faststart for streaming compatibility. EPG metadata is discarded as MP4 metadata fields do not map to WTV's proprietary EPG structure.
The Android preset at 720p with 2-4 Mbps H.264 preserves excellent visual quality from WTV broadcast sources. Standard definition recordings (480i MPEG-2) upscale slightly to fill modern phone screens. HD recordings (720p/1080i) are preserved at native 720p resolution. Audio at 128 kbps AAC stereo is transparent for broadcast content. File sizes are approximately 1-2 GB per hour — manageable for modern Android devices with 64-256 GB storage.
