About DivX to FLV Conversion

FLV (Flash Video) was the backbone of web video from 2005 to 2015, powering early YouTube, Newgrounds, and millions of embedded Flash players. DivX was the dominant offline video format during the same era. Converting DivX to FLV bridges these two 2000s-era formats, useful for legacy Flash media servers, RTMP streaming setups, and archived web content that specifically requires Flash Video input.

Why Convert DivX to FLV?

Legacy enterprise systems, RTMP streaming servers (Wowza, Adobe Media Server), and certain content management systems still expect FLV files. If you have DivX video archives that need to feed into these Flash-era systems, direct conversion to FLV avoids intermediate steps. Some video hosting platforms also accept FLV uploads for server-side re-encoding.

Common Use Cases

  • Feeding DivX video into legacy RTMP streaming servers for live re-streaming
  • Uploading DivX content to CMS platforms that only accept FLV format
  • Converting DivX training videos for playback in older Flash-based LMS systems
  • Preserving DivX content in FLV for historical Flash web archives
  • Creating FLV source files from DivX for legacy media encoding pipelines

How It Works

The DivX AVI container is demuxed, and the MPEG-4 Part 2 video is transcoded to either Sorenson Spark (H.263 variant for Flash 6+) or H.264 (for Flash 9+). Audio is re-encoded from MP3 to either MP3 (kept as-is in FLV) or AAC for Flash 9+. The FLV container writes audio, video, and metadata (onMetaData) tags sequentially with millisecond timestamps.

Quality & Performance

H.264 in FLV matches the quality of H.264 in any container — the codec performance is identical. Since DivX used MPEG-4 Part 2, the H.264 re-encode at the same bitrate will actually look slightly better. Sorenson Spark is lower quality and should only be used for Flash 6/7 compatibility.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Copy the MP3 audio stream directly to FLV to avoid unnecessary audio re-encoding
  • 2Use H.264 in FLV for the best quality — only fall back to Sorenson Spark for very old Flash Player targets
  • 3Write proper onMetaData tags in the FLV for correct seeking and duration display in Flash players
  • 4For modern use, convert to MP4 or WebM instead — FLV is only appropriate for legacy Flash systems

DivX to FLV conversion serves the niche of legacy Flash ecosystems and RTMP infrastructure, converting the era's dominant offline format into its dominant online format.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

RTMP streaming (which uses FLV internally) is still used for live stream ingest by Twitch, YouTube Live, and Facebook Live. Standalone FLV file playback is rare in 2024+.
Yes. FLV supports MP3 audio natively. The MP3 stream can be copied directly from the DivX AVI into the FLV container without re-encoding.
H.264 for Flash 9+ targets (vastly better quality). Sorenson Spark only if you must support Flash Player 6/7 (very rare today).
With H.264 encoding at the same bitrate, FLV output can actually look better than DivX because H.264 is a more efficient codec than MPEG-4 Part 2.
Yes. VLC handles FLV files without any issues. It is the most reliable way to play FLV files on modern systems since browser Flash support has been removed.
