About M4A to AVI Conversion
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is Microsoft's legacy multimedia container from 1992. Converting M4A audio to AVI wraps the sound inside a video-oriented container, which is an atypical operation required only for specialized legacy systems. AVI cannot contain AAC audio natively, so the M4A audio must be re-encoded to PCM or MP3 before being packaged in the AVI container.
Why Convert M4A to AVI?
Certain legacy Windows applications, kiosk systems, industrial automation displays, and older video editing software only recognize AVI files. When these systems need audio content, wrapping it in AVI is the only option. Some older slideshow generators and presentation tools from the early 2000s also only accept AVI multimedia.
Common Use Cases
- Supplying audio to kiosk or industrial display systems locked to AVI format
- Importing audio into legacy video editing software that only accepts AVI input
- Creating background audio files for older PowerPoint-like presentation tools
- Feeding automated media pipelines that process only AVI containers
How It Works
FFmpeg decodes the M4A's AAC or ALAC audio to PCM, then muxes it into an AVI container as PCM (wav-compatible) or re-encodes to MP3 for smaller file size. AVI uses the RIFF structure with interleaved audio/video chunks. The AVI container does not support AAC, Vorbis, or Opus codecs natively — only PCM, MP3, AC3, and DTS.
Quality & Performance
PCM audio inside AVI preserves the full decoded quality from the M4A source. MP3 at 320 kbps in AVI provides excellent quality with smaller file size. The container choice does not affect audio quality.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Use PCM audio inside AVI if the target system supports it for maximum quality
- 2Use MP3 at 320 kbps inside AVI to keep files compact while maintaining excellent quality
- 3Test on your target system before batch converting — AVI codec support varies widely
- 4Include a minimal video track (static image) if the AVI player requires a video stream
Related Conversions
M4A to AVI is a niche conversion for legacy system compatibility. Use PCM for lossless quality or MP3 for compact files. Consider modern alternatives (MP4, MKV) unless AVI is strictly required.
