RTF (Rich Text Format) is Microsoft's text-based document interchange format, using plain-text control words like \b for bold and \par for paragraph break to encode formatting. DOC is Microsoft Word's binary format (1997-2003) using the OLE2 compound document structure. Converting RTF to DOC moves a text-based formatted document into Word's native binary format, enabling full access to Word-specific features and seamless integration with Microsoft Office workflows.
While both formats are Microsoft-originated, they serve different purposes. RTF was designed for cross-platform interchange — readable by any word processor. DOC was designed for the full Microsoft Word experience — supporting macros, OLE embedding, tracked changes, and the complete Word feature set. Converting RTF to DOC upgrades the document's capabilities while maintaining all existing formatting.
DOC format unlocks Microsoft Word features that RTF cannot support. If you receive RTF files but need to work with them in Word with full functionality — including revision tracking, advanced field codes, and OLE object embedding — converting to DOC provides the complete Word document model.
Some legacy systems specifically require DOC format and will not accept RTF. Document management systems, automated workflow engines, and legal filing systems built around Microsoft Word's binary format may reject RTF uploads. Converting to DOC ensures compatibility with these Word-specific systems.
LibreOffice opens the RTF file by parsing its control word syntax — reading font tables (\fonttbl), color tables (\colortbl), style sheets (\stylesheet), and body content with inline formatting control words. The document model is then serialized to DOC binary format using the OLE2 compound file writer. RTF paragraph properties (\pard, \fi, \li, \sb, \sa) are mapped to Word paragraph SPRMs, character formatting (\b, \i, \f, \fs) becomes character SPRMs, and table structures (\trowd, \cellx) are written as binary table definitions. Hex-encoded images from \pict groups are decoded and embedded in the DOC binary.
Standard formatting transfers accurately: fonts, bold, italic, underline, colors, paragraph alignment, line spacing, tables, images, headers, and footers. RTF is a simpler format than DOC, so the conversion is essentially additive — everything in the RTF can be represented in DOC. No formatting is lost. The DOC may actually render slightly better than the RTF in Word because the format is native to Word's rendering engine.
