AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) stores uncompressed PCM audio and is Apple's answer to Microsoft's WAV format. It is the preferred working format for professional audio production on macOS, natively supported by Logic Pro, GarageBand, Final Cut Pro, and all Apple audio tools. Converting a 3GPP mobile video to AIFF extracts the audio track into an uncompressed format ideal for editing and mastering on Mac-based systems.
Professional audio workflows on macOS often begin with AIFF files. If you are incorporating audio from GSM phone recordings into a music production, podcast, or film project, AIFF provides a lossless working copy that can be edited, filtered, and processed without accumulating compression artifacts across saves.
AIFF also preserves the decoded audio at full PCM resolution, which is important if you plan to apply spectral processing, noise reduction, or pitch correction. These tools work best on uncompressed data where every sample is available without codec-induced rounding.
FFmpeg extracts the audio stream from the 3GPP container, decodes it from AMR or AAC, and writes PCM samples into an AIFF container. The output sample rate mirrors the source (8 kHz for AMR, up to 48 kHz for AAC) unless explicitly overridden. Bit depth defaults to 16-bit signed integer, with 24-bit available for higher-quality AAC sources.
AIFF stores uncompressed audio, so it introduces zero additional degradation. The quality is exactly what the decoded AMR or AAC stream provides — no more, no less. For AMR sources at 8 kHz, the AIFF output sounds identical to the decoded AMR but takes up significantly more storage space. The benefit is zero-loss editing capability.
