The iPod — from the classic click-wheel models to the iPod Touch — relies on AAC and MP3 as its primary audio codecs. AMR files are not supported by any iPod model's firmware. The iPod Audio preset converts AMR voice recordings into AAC at a bit rate and sample rate that every iPod generation can decode, letting you sync the files through iTunes or Finder.
iPods have never supported AMR playback. Whether you are maintaining an iPod Classic, Nano, Shuffle, or Touch, you need to convert voice recordings to a compatible format before syncing. The iPod Audio preset uses AAC with settings specifically validated against the iPod's limited hardware decoder, avoiding codec profiles that newer devices support but older iPods cannot handle.
The conversion decodes AMR to PCM and encodes to AAC-LC profile at 64 kbps, 44.1 kHz mono (upsampled from AMR's native rate for iPod compatibility). The M4A container uses the iTunes-compatible metadata structure. AAC-LC was supported from the very first iPod that handled AAC (3rd generation, 2003).
AAC-LC at 64 kbps is more than sufficient for voice content originally recorded at AMR's narrow bandwidth. The iPod's headphone amplifier and EQ settings can further enhance clarity during playback.
