About DivX to WMV Conversion

WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's video codec and container, the proprietary counterpart to DivX during the early 2000s codec wars. Converting DivX to WMV moves content from MPEG-4 Part 2 in AVI to Windows Media Video 9 in ASF/WMV containers. While both are legacy formats, WMV is better supported in Windows-specific environments — Windows Movie Maker, PowerPoint, Silverlight, and SharePoint all handle WMV natively.

Why Convert DivX to WMV?

Certain Microsoft ecosystem tools specifically require WMV input. Windows Movie Maker imports WMV more reliably than AVI/DivX. PowerPoint embeds WMV videos with full playback controls. SharePoint Online's media player handles WMV natively. If your workflow is deeply integrated with Microsoft Office and Windows media tools, WMV provides smoother integration than DivX AVI.

Common Use Cases

  • Importing DivX footage into Windows Movie Maker for editing
  • Embedding DivX video content in PowerPoint presentations as WMV
  • Preparing DivX recordings for SharePoint Online media libraries
  • Converting DivX content for Windows Media Center setups
  • Creating WMV files from DivX for Silverlight-based web applications

How It Works

The DivX MPEG-4 Part 2 video is decoded and re-encoded using the WMV9 (Windows Media Video 9) codec, based on an early draft of VC-1. Audio is transcoded from MP3 to WMA v2. The output uses the ASF container (stored with a .wmv extension). WMV9 offers compression efficiency slightly better than MPEG-4 Part 2 but behind H.264.

Quality & Performance

WMV9 at the same bitrate produces slightly better results than DivX MPEG-4 Part 2 — it is a marginally more efficient codec. A 700 MB DivX movie can be converted to WMV at approximately 600-700 MB for similar visual quality. At higher bitrates (4+ Mbps), the difference between DivX and WMV9 diminishes.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use WMV only when a Microsoft tool specifically requires it — MP4 is the better choice for general use
  • 2Match the DivX bitrate in WMV to produce a similar file size with marginally better quality
  • 3For PowerPoint embedding, use WMV at 2-4 Mbps and keep the resolution at 720p or below
  • 4Test WMV playback in your target Microsoft application before batch-converting a large DivX collection

DivX to WMV conversion moves content between two era-defining formats, useful primarily for Microsoft ecosystem integration where WMV is the expected or required video format.

Ofte stilte spørsmål

WMV9 is slightly more efficient than MPEG-4 Part 2 (DivX) — typically 10-15% better compression at equivalent quality. Both are far behind H.264 in efficiency.
VLC plays WMV on macOS. Apple's native apps do not support WMV. For Mac use, convert to MP4 instead.
Yes. PowerPoint on Windows handles WMV embedding natively, with proper playback controls, poster frames, and trimming support.
WMV usage is declining but persists in Windows-centric enterprise environments, legacy SharePoint installations, and older Microsoft training content.
MP4 for universal compatibility. WMV only if you specifically need it for Windows Movie Maker, PowerPoint, SharePoint, or other Microsoft-specific tools.
