About RAW to BMP Conversion

RAW to BMP converts unprocessed camera sensor data into a Windows Bitmap image file. Camera RAW files store the full 12-14 bit readout from the sensor's photosites, with no demosaicing, white balance, or compression applied. BMP is one of the simplest image formats — uncompressed pixel data with a minimal header. It stores every pixel's color values directly, making it the digital equivalent of a complete, unprocessed photograph.

Our converter uses Sharp to decode the RAW sensor data, apply demosaicing and tone mapping, then writes the result as a 24-bit or 32-bit BMP file.

Why Convert RAW to BMP?

BMP's simplicity is its strength. Many legacy Windows applications, embedded systems, industrial displays, and scientific imaging tools work exclusively with BMP files. The format requires no decoder beyond reading raw pixel values from a fixed offset — any software that can display pixels can display a BMP. Converting RAW to BMP gives you the full decoded image in the most universally parseable format possible.

Common Use Cases

  • Prepare decoded RAW photos for legacy Windows image processing applications
  • Generate BMP frames from RAW sensor data for industrial vision systems
  • Create wallpapers from RAW photos for systems that only support BMP format
  • Export RAW data as BMP for pixel-level analysis in scientific research
  • Convert RAW captures to BMP for embedded display systems with BMP-only firmware

How It Works

Sharp reads the RAW file, applies Bayer demosaicing to reconstruct full RGB color from the sensor's color filter array, then applies white balance correction and gamma tone mapping. The resulting image is written as a BMP with a BITMAPINFOHEADER (40 bytes), followed by pixel data in BGR byte order (BMP convention). Standard output is 24-bit (8 bits per channel, no alpha). 32-bit BMP with alpha channel is available when transparency is needed. No compression is applied in the standard BMP output.

Quality & Performance

The image quality is limited only by the RAW decode pipeline — BMP stores pixels without any compression, so the decoded sensor data is preserved at full fidelity. The 12-14 bit RAW data is tone-mapped to 8 bits per channel (BMP standard), which discards some dynamic range. The spatial resolution of the sensor is fully preserved.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use 24-bit BMP for maximum compatibility with legacy systems
  • 2BMP files are large — ensure sufficient storage for batch conversions of RAW photo shoots
  • 3Apply white balance during RAW decode for accurate colors in the BMP output
  • 4For web or sharing, convert to JPEG or PNG instead — BMP files are impractical for distribution
  • 532-bit BMP includes an alpha channel, useful for compositing workflows

RAW to BMP produces the most straightforward image file from camera sensor data. No compression, no complexity — just pixels in a header, ready for any application that can read bitmap data.

Ofte stilte spørsmål

Standard BMP files store pixels without compression. BMP does support optional RLE compression, but it is rarely used and our converter outputs uncompressed data.
Large. A 24-megapixel RAW file produces approximately a 72 MB BMP (24 MP x 3 bytes per pixel). File size is directly proportional to image dimensions.
No. Standard BMP is 8 bits per channel (24-bit total). RAW files capture 12-14 bits per channel. The extra dynamic range is compressed through tone mapping during conversion.
BMP is simpler to parse and has zero decoding overhead. Use it when the target system requires BMP specifically, or when you need guaranteed compatibility with the most basic image readers.
No. BMP has no standard metadata support. Camera information from the RAW file (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) is not carried through to BMP.
