Converting WAVE to M4A wraps compressed audio (typically AAC) in an MPEG-4 container with full metadata support. M4A is essentially the audio-only version of MP4 — it uses the same container format but signals to players that only audio content is present. WAVE files (.wave or .wav) both convert to M4A through the same encoding process.
M4A has become the default audio format for Apple's ecosystem — iTunes Store purchases, Apple Music downloads, Voice Memos, GarageBand exports, and podcast recordings all use M4A. It offers better quality than MP3 at equivalent bitrates and richer metadata support than most competing formats.
M4A provides the most complete audio file format for modern use: excellent compression quality (AAC or ALAC inside), rich metadata (title, artist, album, embedded artwork, lyrics, chapter markers), and universal device support. Converting from WAVE gives you all these benefits while reducing file size by 90% or more.
For music distribution, M4A/AAC is the delivery format for Apple Music, YouTube Music, and many streaming platforms. For voice recordings, M4A's metadata support enables proper organization in podcast apps and audio managers.
FFmpeg decodes WAVE PCM and encodes to AAC-LC within an M4A (MPEG-4 Part 14) container. The container supports multiple metadata atoms including moov, udta, and ilst for rich tagging. Common settings are 128-256 kbps stereo for music and 64-96 kbps mono for speech. The M4A container also supports ALAC for lossless encoding — use -c:a alac for lossless output within the same container format.
At 128 kbps AAC, M4A provides quality superior to 128 kbps MP3 — roughly equivalent to 160-192 kbps MP3. At 256 kbps (Apple's 'iTunes Plus' quality), the M4A output is perceptually transparent for virtually all listeners and equipment. For lossless quality, ALAC encoding within M4A preserves every sample from the WAVE source.
