About FLAC to AVI Conversion

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a multimedia container developed by Microsoft in 1992. While primarily a video format, AVI can store audio-only content. How It Works

FFmpeg decodes the FLAC stream and muxes the resulting PCM audio (or re-encodes to MP3/AC3) into an AVI container. AVI uses a RIFF-based structure with interleaved audio and video chunks. For audio-only AVI, the video stream is absent or contains a single blank frame. The audio can be stored as uncompressed PCM (WAVE-compatible), MP3, or AC3 inside AVI. AVI does not support AAC, Vorbis, or Opus natively.

Quality & Performance

If the audio is stored as PCM inside AVI, quality is identical to the FLAC source — both are lossless. If re-encoded to MP3 or AC3 for smaller file size, standard lossy compression applies. At 320 kbps MP3 or 640 kbps AC3, quality remains excellent for most applications.
