M4R and M4A are structurally identical — both are MPEG-4 containers holding AAC audio. The only difference is the file extension: .m4r tells iOS the file is a ringtone, while .m4a tells it the file is music. Converting M4R to M4A is the simplest possible audio conversion, often achievable by just renaming the file extension. A full transcode decodes and re-encodes the audio, which takes longer but allows bitrate or sample rate adjustments. FFmpeg defaults to a codec copy when both source and target use AAC in MPEG-4 containers.
When performed as a remux (the default), the conversion is completely lossless — the AAC audio data is copied without any decoding or re-encoding. The output M4A file sounds exactly like the input M4R file because the audio bitstream is identical. Even with a full transcode at matching bitrate, the quality difference is imperceptible for short ringtone clips.
