CAF and AIFF are both Apple audio containers, but they serve different purposes. CAF (Core Audio Format) is the modern, flexible container supporting any codec, unlimited file sizes, and professional metadata (markers, regions, channel layouts). AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is the classic 1988 uncompressed PCM container with simpler structure and broader compatibility.
Converting CAF to AIFF extracts the audio, decodes to PCM if necessary, and stores it in the widely compatible AIFF container. This is needed when sharing macOS professional recordings with systems or collaborators that support AIFF but not CAF.
AIFF is supported by virtually every audio application on macOS and many on Windows, while CAF support is limited to Core Audio-aware applications. When sharing recordings with collaborators using Pro Tools, Audacity, or non-Apple DAWs, AIFF is the safer Apple-native format.
AIFF also has better compatibility with CD burning software, hardware samplers, and broadcast systems that expect uncompressed Apple-format audio. Converting CAF to AIFF makes professional macOS recordings accessible to a wider range of audio tools.
FFmpeg reads the CAF container, decodes the enclosed audio to PCM (if not already PCM), and writes to an AIFF container with big-endian byte order. If the CAF contains uncompressed PCM, the conversion is essentially a container swap with byte-order adjustment. If the CAF contains ALAC, the decode is lossless. CAF-specific metadata (markers, regions) does not transfer to AIFF's simpler structure.
For CAF files containing PCM or ALAC, the conversion is lossless — the AIFF output preserves every sample exactly. For CAF files containing lossy codecs (AAC, MP3), the AIFF captures the decoded audio at its current quality level. No additional quality loss occurs during the container conversion.
