FLV (Flash Video) was built for streaming over HTTP with a simple header optimized for progressive download. AVI (Audio Video Interleave), introduced by Microsoft in 1992 as part of Video for Windows, is one of the oldest multimedia containers still in active use. FFmpeg remuxes or transcodes the FLV video stream (Sorenson Spark, VP6, or H.264) into an AVI container. When the FLV contains H.264, FourCC is set to 'H264' or 'X264'. For broader compatibility, MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid/DivX-compatible) encoding can be used. Audio is transcoded to PCM or MP3 for AVI compatibility. The AVI container uses an index chunk (idx1 or indx) at the end of the file for random access.
If using a lossless or high-quality codec (Huffyuv, UT Video, or high-bitrate MPEG-4), the AVI output matches the FLV source quality. With Xvid encoding at bitrates above 2000 kbps, visual quality is excellent. AVI with uncompressed PCM audio preserves the full decoded audio fidelity from the FLV source.
