About ODT to RTF Conversion

ODT is a modern XML-based document format following the open ISO standard. RTF (Rich Text Format) is Microsoft's text-based document interchange format, using plain-text control words to encode formatting. While ODT is more feature-rich and modern, RTF offers unparalleled cross-platform compatibility — every word processor on every operating system for the past 30 years can read RTF files.

Converting ODT to RTF trades modern features for universal readability. The resulting file preserves text formatting (fonts, bold, italic, tables, images) in a format that opens everywhere — from Microsoft WordPad on Windows to TextEdit on macOS to any Linux text editor with RTF support.

Why Convert ODT to RTF?

RTF is the safest interchange format when you do not know what software the recipient uses. LibreOffice users creating ODT files may need to share with recipients on unknown platforms where neither ODT nor DOCX support is guaranteed. RTF is the one format that works reliably everywhere.

RTF also passes through email security filters that may block ODT attachments. Some corporate email gateways block OpenDocument files due to unfamiliarity or policy restrictions. RTF, as a long-established Microsoft format, passes through virtually all email security systems without issue.

Common Use Cases

  • Share ODT documents with recipients on unknown platforms for maximum compatibility
  • Send formatted documents through email security systems that block ODT attachments
  • Provide documents to legacy applications that accept RTF but not ODT
  • Create a universally compatible backup of ODT files
  • Exchange formatted documents between diverse operating systems and word processors

How It Works

LibreOffice opens the ODT natively and exports to RTF using its RTF Writer filter. ODF paragraph styles are translated to RTF paragraph control words (\pard, \fi, \li), character formatting becomes RTF character words (\b, \i, \ul, \f, \fs), and tables are written using RTF table control words (\trowd, \cellx). Images from the ODT's Pictures/ directory are re-encoded as RTF \pict groups with hex-encoded image data. ODF page styles are mapped to RTF section properties. The resulting file is 7-bit ASCII with hex escapes for non-ASCII characters.

Quality & Performance

Standard formatting converts cleanly: fonts, character formatting, paragraph styles, tables, images, headers, footers, and lists. ODF-specific features without RTF equivalents — ODF drawing shapes, some list continuation behaviors, and advanced metadata — may simplify. RTF supports fewer formatting features than ODT, so some visual refinements may be lost. For typical business documents, the conversion preserves all important content and formatting.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use RTF when the recipient's word processor is unknown — it works everywhere
  • 2Expect larger file sizes due to RTF's hex-encoding of images and lack of compression
  • 3RTF is safe for email — it cannot contain macros, so it passes through all security filters
  • 4For modern recipients, DOCX is usually a better choice with more formatting preservation
  • 5Remove ODF-specific features before converting for the cleanest RTF output

Related Conversions

ODT to RTF produces a universally compatible document from open-standard content. Use it when cross-platform compatibility is more important than feature richness.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Likely yes. ODT uses ZIP compression while RTF hex-encodes images and is uncompressed text. Documents with images may produce RTF files 2-3x larger.
Effectively yes. RTF is supported by Word, LibreOffice, Pages, TextEdit, WordPad, Google Docs, and virtually every word processor created since the 1990s.
ODF drawing objects, some advanced list styles, metadata fields, and macro content. Standard text formatting, tables, and images are preserved.
No. RTF cannot contain executable code, which makes it safe for email distribution and avoids security concerns.
DOCX for modern recipients with Word or Google Docs. RTF when you need the absolute broadest compatibility across all platforms and word processors.
