About CAF to WAV Conversion

CAF (Core Audio Format) is Apple's professional container supporting any codec, unlimited file sizes, and rich production metadata. WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) stores uncompressed PCM in Microsoft's RIFF container — the most universally compatible audio format. WAV has a practical 4 GB file size limit (due to its 32-bit size field), which CAF was specifically designed to overcome.

Converting CAF to WAV extracts the audio, decodes to PCM if necessary, and stores it in the universally compatible RIFF/WAV container. This is the standard export path when macOS professional recordings must be shared with non-Apple systems.

Why Convert CAF to WAV?

WAV is the universal audio interchange format — every operating system, DAW, hardware device, and embedded system handles WAV natively. CAF support is limited to macOS Core Audio applications. Converting CAF to WAV ensures your recordings work everywhere.

WAV is also the expected delivery format for many mastering facilities, broadcast systems, film/TV post-production, and CD manufacturing. When professional macOS recordings must enter these pipelines, WAV is the standard format.

Common Use Cases

  • Sharing Logic Pro recordings with studios using Pro Tools on Windows
  • Delivering audio to mastering facilities requiring WAV format
  • Converting CAF for film/TV post-production workflows
  • Preparing macOS audio for CD mastering and manufacturing
  • Creating universally compatible audio from professional macOS sessions

How It Works

FFmpeg reads the CAF container, decodes the enclosed audio to PCM (lossless from PCM/ALAC, lossy decode from AAC/others), and writes to a WAV RIFF container with little-endian byte order and standard PCM format. The output preserves sample rate, bit depth, and channel layout. Note: WAV has a ~4 GB file size limit. For recordings that approach this limit, consider FLAC or keep CAF.

Quality & Performance

From PCM or ALAC in CAF, the conversion is perfectly lossless. From lossy codecs in CAF, WAV captures the full decoded audio. No additional quality loss occurs. The only limitation is WAV's 4 GB size cap for very large files.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use WAV for maximum cross-platform compatibility — it works everywhere without codec dependencies
  • 2Check for the 4 GB limit if your CAF contains very long or multichannel recordings
  • 3Export production metadata (markers, regions) separately before converting — WAV cannot store them
  • 4For long recordings approaching 4 GB, consider FLAC as an alternative to WAV
  • 5Batch convert CAF sessions when preparing deliverables for external studios

From PCM or ALAC in CAF, yes — perfectly lossless. From lossy codecs, WAV captures the decoded audio without additional loss.
WAV has a 4 GB limit. For very long or multichannel recordings that exceed this, use RF64 WAV, FLAC, or keep CAF.
Basic metadata goes into WAV's INFO chunk. CAF's markers, regions, and channel layouts do not transfer to WAV.
