M2TS from Blu-ray and AVCHD contains high-fidelity audio — Dolby AC3 5.1 at 640 kbps, DTS at up to 1.5 Mbps, or LPCM at 24-bit/48 kHz uncompressed. OGG Vorbis is Xiph.org's open-source lossy audio codec, offering quality comparable to MP3 and AAC at similar bitrates while being completely patent-free. Converting M2TS to OGG extracts audio from HD video into an open-source format ideal for Linux, game development, and free software projects.
OGG Vorbis is the standard audio format for open-source ecosystems — natively supported by Linux, Firefox, Chromium, and many game engines (Unity, Godot, Unreal Engine). It is Spotify's internal streaming format. Converting M2TS audio to OGG produces freely-licensed audio files that can be distributed without codec patent concerns, making it ideal for Creative Commons projects, open-source software, and game audio.
FFmpeg extracts the audio from the M2TS transport stream, decodes AC3/DTS/LPCM to PCM, downmixes multi-channel to stereo (optional), and encodes using libvorbis at a configurable quality level (0-10). Quality 5 targets approximately 160 kbps VBR, quality 7 targets approximately 224 kbps. The Vorbis encoder uses MDCT with psychoacoustic modeling. Output is wrapped in an OGG container with Vorbis comment metadata tags.
Vorbis at quality 6 (~192 kbps) produces audio quality comparable to 256 kbps MP3 — transparent for most content. From lossless M2TS sources (LPCM, DTS-HD MA), high-quality Vorbis encoding captures virtually all audible detail. From AC3 sources, the quality is bounded by the original AC3 encoding. Transcoding between lossy formats (AC3 to OGG) introduces theoretical quality loss but it is imperceptible at quality 5+.
