WMV files are video files in Microsoft's ASF container that carry both video (VC-1/WMV2) and audio (WMA) streams. WMA (Windows Media Audio) is the audio-only companion format, using the same ASF container but containing only the audio track. Converting WMV to WMA extracts the audio stream and discards the video, producing a standalone audio file in Microsoft's native format. This is the most efficient extraction possible when you want to stay within the Windows Media ecosystem.
When you need only the audio from a WMV file and your playback environment is Windows-based (Windows Media Player, Zune, Windows Phone legacy, car stereos with WMA support), extracting to WMA avoids any lossy re-encoding. If the WMV contains WMA audio, the extraction can be a direct stream copy — the WMA audio data is moved from the video container to an audio-only container with zero quality loss and near-instant processing.
FFmpeg opens the ASF container and performs a stream copy of the WMA audio track into a new ASF container with the .wma extension. This is a remux operation — the audio data is not decoded or re-encoded, making it instantaneous and lossless. If the source is WMA Standard, WMA Pro, or WMA Lossless, the output preserves the exact bitstream. The video track is simply discarded.
When stream-copying, quality is identical to the original WMV's audio — not a single bit of audio data is changed. This is the only truly lossless extraction method since no decoding or encoding occurs. The WMA output is bit-for-bit identical to what was stored in the WMV file.
