The output is big-endian PCM (the native byte order for AIFF). Standard bit depths are 16-bit (CD quality) and 24-bit (professional studio quality). Sample rate is preserved from the source.

If the M4A contains AAC (lossy), the AIFF faithfully represents the decoded AAC audio but cannot recover information lost during AAC encoding. Converting lossy AAC to uncompressed AIFF does not improve quality — it just changes the container while inflating file size.
