JPG and JPEG are identical formats — the only difference is the file extension (.jpg vs .jpeg), a relic of early Windows systems that limited extensions to three characters. Converting Olympus ORF RAW files to JPG produces the same DCT-compressed photographic image as JPEG, packaged with the shorter extension that remains the most common in everyday use.
Olympus cameras using the Micro Four Thirds sensor system — the OM-1, E-M5 series, PEN-F, and others — generate ORF files containing 12-bit sensor data, IBIS metadata, and proprietary color processing information. The JPG conversion renders this RAW data into a standard compressed photograph ready for immediate use across all devices and platforms.
Many software systems, web forms, and upload portals specifically request files with the .jpg extension. While modern applications treat .jpg and .jpeg identically, some older content management systems, form validators, and file filters only accept .jpg. Converting directly from ORF to JPG eliminates any extension confusion and produces files that pass every validation check.
The ORF-to-JPG path is particularly common for Olympus users who shoot RAW-only (without in-camera JPEG) and need to quickly produce shareable versions. Rather than processing each file through Olympus Workspace or Lightroom, batch conversion to JPG gives you publication-ready images with standard color rendering in seconds.
The conversion is functionally identical to ORF-to-JPEG. The ORF file's 12-bit Bayer data is demosaiced to full-color RGB, white balance correction is applied from camera metadata, and the result is compressed using JPEG's DCT algorithm. The output file uses the .jpg extension. EXIF metadata including Olympus camera model, lens data, and shooting parameters is preserved. The file is byte-for-byte identical to what a JPEG conversion would produce — only the extension differs.
Quality characteristics are identical to JPEG. At high settings (85-95%), the output is visually indistinguishable from the lossless render for most viewing purposes. The 12-bit to 8-bit depth reduction means extreme highlight and shadow recovery is not available, but this is inherent to all 8-bit output formats. Olympus Micro Four Thirds sensors produce clean images with good dynamic range that compress well to JPG with minimal visible artifacting.
