FLV (Flash Video) was the web's dominant video format during the same era RMVB dominated Asian file sharing — the mid-2000s to early 2010s. FLV uses Sorenson Spark (H.263) or VP6 video with MP3/AAC audio in Adobe's Flash container. Converting RMVB to FLV moves content from one era-specific format to another, which is primarily useful for legacy web systems still running Flash-based video infrastructure.
Some legacy e-learning platforms, Chinese video portals, and enterprise intranets still use Flash-based video players that exclusively accept FLV input. RMVB files can't be served through Flash infrastructure, so conversion to FLV is necessary for these specific legacy systems.
FFmpeg decodes the RealVideo and RealAudio streams, then re-encodes to H.264 Baseline (or VP6) for video and AAC (or MP3) for audio in the FLV container. H.264 in FLV requires Flash Player 9.0.115+. The FLV tags and timestamps are written for progressive download and RTMP streaming compatibility.
FLV with H.264 produces quality comparable to any other H.264 container at the same bitrate. Since RMVB's RealVideo and H.264 are both efficient codecs, the conversion maintains or slightly improves visual quality at similar file sizes. VP6 output is noticeably worse than H.264.
