How It Works

AMR-NB is narrowband (300-3400 Hz) and intended purely for speech — music will sound extremely distorted. AMR-WB extends to 50-7000 Hz and sounds significantly better for voice, often described as HD Voice quality. Neither variant is suitable for music. At the maximum AMR-NB rate of 12.2 kbps, speech is clear and fully intelligible. At lower rates (4.75-5.9 kbps), speech becomes more compressed but remains understandable.
