AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a multimedia container developed by Microsoft in 1992. While primarily a video format, AVI can store audio-only content. Converting FLAC to AVI wraps the audio stream inside an AVI container — an unusual operation that is sometimes required for legacy media players, older video editing software, or automated pipelines that exclusively accept AVI input regardless of whether the content is video or audio.

Certain legacy Windows applications and media players from the early 2000s only recognize AVI files. Some industrial automation systems, kiosk displays, and embedded devices use AVI as their sole media input format. In video editing workflows, an audio-only AVI may be required as a placeholder or for synchronized import into older versions of Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas.

FFmpeg decodes the FLAC stream and muxes the resulting PCM audio (or re-encodes to MP3/AC3) into an AVI container. AVI uses a RIFF-based structure with interleaved audio and video chunks. For audio-only AVI, the video stream is absent or contains a single blank frame. The audio can be stored as uncompressed PCM (WAVE-compatible), MP3, or AC3 inside AVI. AVI does not support AAC, Vorbis, or Opus natively.
