FLV files contain audio compressed with MP3, AAC, or Nellymoser codecs inside Adobe's Flash Video container. ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) is Apple's lossless compression format introduced in 2004 and open-sourced in 2011. ALAC achieves roughly 50-60% compression of PCM data with zero quality loss, making it the preferred lossless format for the Apple ecosystem — iTunes, Apple Music, iPhone, iPad, and HomePod all support ALAC natively. Converting FLV to ALAC extracts the audio and stores it in a lossless, Apple-optimized container.
If you want to archive FLV audio without any generation loss while keeping file sizes manageable, ALAC is the ideal choice for Apple users. Unlike uncompressed AIFF or WAV, ALAC files are roughly half the size while being bit-for-bit identical when decoded. Every Apple device since the iPod nano (2005) supports ALAC playback without third-party apps.
FFmpeg demuxes the FLV container, decodes the audio to PCM, and re-encodes using the ALAC encoder into an M4A container (MPEG-4 Part 14 with Apple Lossless audio). ALAC uses adaptive linear prediction and entropy coding (modified Rice coding) to achieve lossless compression. Output supports up to 32-bit depth and 384 kHz sample rate, though FLV sources are typically 16-bit/44.1 kHz.
ALAC is mathematically lossless — the decoded output is bit-for-bit identical to the input PCM. The only quality limitation is the FLV source itself. If the original audio was MP3 at 128 kbps, the ALAC output will perfectly preserve that decoded audio, artifacts and all, without adding any further degradation.

FLV to ALAC conversion delivers the best of both worlds for Apple users: lossless audio quality at roughly half the file size of uncompressed formats. It is the cleanest way to extract and archive Flash-era audio for the Apple ecosystem.
