It guarantees playback without troubleshooting device-specific compatibility.
No mobile device supports MXF playback. The Mobile preset converts professional broadcast footage to the most universally compatible mobile format: H.264 Baseline at 480p in MP4. This plays on every Android phone, iPhone, feature phone with video capability, tablet, car infotainment screen, and portable media player manufactured in the last 15 years.
The 480p resolution produces compact files that transfer quickly over any connection. A one-hour broadcast MXF at 13 GB (DNxHD 185) converts to approximately 500-800 MB at 480p — small enough for email attachment, messaging app transfer, or Bluetooth sharing in the field.
FFmpeg demuxes the MXF container, decoding the professional codec and downscaling to 480p (854x480 or 640x480). The Mobile preset uses H.264 Baseline Profile Level 3.0 with AAC-LC stereo at 96-128 kbps. Video bitrate targets 1-2 Mbps. The primary stereo audio pair is selected from multi-track MXF audio. Interlaced sources are deinterlaced. The MP4 container includes faststart.
At 480p with 1-2 Mbps, the Mobile preset produces clean, watchable video on screens up to 5-6 inches. Broadcast MXF content is heavily downsampled from its professional quality, but on small mobile screens the result is sharp and clear. The priority is universal compatibility over maximum quality. Files are 500-800 MB per hour.
