WMA is Microsoft's audio codec stored in the ASF container. WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's video format, also using the ASF container but typically containing both WMV video and WMA audio streams. Both formats are part of the Windows Media framework and share the same underlying container technology.

Converting WMA to WMV wraps the audio in a video-capable ASF container, typically with a static image as the video stream. This is needed for Windows-based systems that require video-format files, PowerPoint presentations, digital signage, and other Windows Media environments that expect WMV input.

Some Windows-based presentation systems, digital signage displays, and corporate media servers only accept WMV files. Converting WMA audio to WMV with a static image creates compatible content. Older versions of PowerPoint work most reliably with WMV media files.

Since both WMA and WMV use the ASF container, the audio stream may be preserved without re-encoding (stream copy) when the target accepts WMA audio in WMV.
