The conversion reads the DNG container, extracts and demosaices sensor data using embedded color matrices, then applies Floyd-Steinberg dithering to quantize the full-color image to 256 indexed colors. Converting high-bit-depth DNG data to 256-color GIF is an extreme quality reduction. Smooth gradients in skies, skin tones, and shadows show visible banding or dithering patterns. Fine color distinctions collapse into the limited palette. This conversion is appropriate only when color fidelity is unimportant.
