M2TS files from Blu-ray discs and AVCHD cameras contain high-fidelity audio — often Dolby AC3 5.1 surround at 640 kbps or DTS at 1.5 Mbps. AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is an ultra-compact narrowband speech codec operating at 4.75-12.2 kbps with an 8 kHz sample rate, designed for GSM cellular voice. Converting M2TS to AMR represents the most extreme audio compression possible — reducing multi-channel HD audio to a telephone-quality mono signal.
AMR conversion from M2TS is relevant when you need to extract voice or dialogue content from Blu-ray or camcorder recordings for use in voice messaging, IVR systems, or devices that only support AMR. The resulting files are incredibly small — a one-hour audio extraction at 12.2 kbps is just 5.5 MB. This is useful in bandwidth-constrained environments, embedded systems with AMR-only decoders, and legacy mobile voice platforms.
FFmpeg extracts the audio from the M2TS transport stream, decodes AC3/DTS/LPCM to PCM, downmixes any multi-channel content to mono, resamples from the original rate (typically 48 kHz) to 8 kHz, and encodes using libopencore-amrnb. The AMR-NB encoder applies ACELP (Algebraic Code-Excited Linear Prediction) optimized for frequencies between 300-3400 Hz — the human speech range. All audio content outside this narrow frequency band is permanently discarded.
Quality is severely limited by AMR's design constraints. At 12.2 kbps with 8 kHz sample rate, only speech is intelligible. Music, sound effects, surround sound, and bass frequencies are completely destroyed. The 48 kHz to 8 kHz resampling alone removes 83% of the frequency spectrum. This format is exclusively suitable for voice content.
