AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is Microsoft's legacy multimedia container from 1992. Converting M4A audio to AVI wraps the sound inside a video-oriented container, which is an atypical operation required only for specialized legacy systems. AVI cannot contain AAC audio natively, so the M4A audio must be re-encoded to PCM or MP3 before being packaged in the AVI container.
