M2TS from Blu-ray discs contains premium audio tracks — Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio (both lossless), AC3 5.1, or uncompressed LPCM. AVCHD camcorder M2TS typically has AAC or AC3 stereo audio. M4A is Apple's audio-only MPEG-4 container, holding AAC or ALAC audio with full iTunes metadata support. M4A is the natural audio format for Apple's ecosystem. FFmpeg extracts and decodes the audio stream from the M2TS transport stream, downmixes multi-channel to stereo (or preserves channels if specified), and encodes to AAC-LC using the native or libfdk_aac encoder. Output is wrapped in the M4A (MP4 audio) container with iTunes-compatible metadata atoms. Bitrate typically targets 256 kbps VBR for high quality. For Blu-ray LPCM sources, the AAC encoding is the only lossy step. For AC3/DTS sources, quality is bounded by the original compressed track.
At 256 kbps AAC, quality from Blu-ray sources is excellent — transparent for most listeners. From lossless sources (LPCM, DTS-HD MA, TrueHD), there is measurable quality loss in the AAC encoding, but it is inaudible at 256+ kbps for typical listening. From already-compressed AC3 at 640 kbps, the AAC output is virtually identical in perceived quality.
