MTS files from AVCHD camcorders contain H.264/AVC video at up to 1080i60 and 24 Mbps — technically decodable on Android, but the MPEG-2 Transport Stream container, interlaced scanning, and high bitrate cause problems on many Android devices. Android Video conversion deinterlaces, re-encodes to a progressive-scan H.264 Baseline or Main profile, and wraps in a standard MP4 container that Android's MediaCodec API hardware-decodes efficiently.
While MTS files contain H.264 video (which Android supports), the combination of MPEG-2 Transport Stream container, interlaced scanning at 1080i, and AC3 audio creates three compatibility barriers. Android's stock gallery and video player apps often fail to open .mts files, show them as audio-only, or display interlacing artifacts (combing lines during motion).
Converting to Android Video solves all three issues: the MP4 container is universally recognized, progressive scan eliminates interlacing artifacts on Android's progressive displays, and AAC audio replaces AC3 which many Android devices cannot decode without third-party libraries. The result plays flawlessly on every Android phone and tablet.
FFmpeg deinterlaces and transcodes: `-vf yadif -c:v libx264 -profile:v main -level 4.0 -crf 22 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -ar 48000 -ac 2 -movflags +faststart`. The yadif filter deinterlaces 1080i to 1080p progressive. For lower-end Android devices, add `-s 1280x720` to downscale. The -movflags +faststart flag enables instant playback without buffering the entire file.
Deinterlacing from 1080i to 1080p with yadif produces clean progressive frames. Re-encoding from AVCHD's 24 Mbps H.264 to CRF 22 (typically 4-8 Mbps) delivers excellent quality — the source bitrate is conservatively high, and CRF 22 retains all perceptible detail. File sizes typically drop by 60-70%.
