About MTS files
MTS files come from AVCHD camcorders made by Sony, Panasonic, Canon and others. They hold H.264 video with AC-3 or PCM sound in a transport stream, inside a folder structure on the memory card.
Phones, social sites and many editors do not accept MTS directly. MP4 keeps the same video but in a container that everything opens.
How we convert MTS to MP4
- Fast path
- MTS is in our copy-only set. With no options changed, we try to copy the H.264 video into MP4 without re-encoding.
- Fallback
- If the camcorder's sound cannot go into MP4 as it is, we delete that attempt and re-encode to H.264 at CRF 23 with AAC sound at 192 kbps.
- Resolution
- Full HD camcorder footage stays 1080p unless you choose a smaller size.
Common problems and fixes
A long recording is split into several MTS files.
Camcorders split long clips at a file size limit. Convert each file, then join them with our video merger.
The MP4 has no sound in my editor.
Pick a quality preset or set an audio bitrate. That forces a full re-encode with AAC sound, which all editors accept.
Motion looks jagged.
Many AVCHD camcorders record interlaced video. Use a player or editor with deinterlacing for the smoothest result.
