About VOB to AVI Conversion

VOB and AVI are both legacy formats from the same era — VOB from the DVD-Video specification (1996) and AVI from Microsoft's Video for Windows (1992). VOB stores MPEG-2 video with AC3/DTS audio in a program stream, while AVI uses the RIFF container with DivX, XviD, MJPEG, or other video codecs paired with MP3 or PCM audio.

Why Convert VOB to AVI?

AVI is the native format for VirtualDub, AviSynth, and many legacy Windows video tools that cannot read VOB program streams. Converting DVD VOBs to AVI enables frame-level editing, filter processing, and batch operations in these tools. AVI is also required by some legacy hardware players, car entertainment systems, and industrial video systems.

The DivX/XviD era of DVD ripping made AVI the standard format for digital movie collections, and many users maintain AVI-based libraries.

Common Use Cases

  • Editing DVD content frame-by-frame in VirtualDub or AviSynth
  • Playing DVD movies on hardware media players that accept AVI but not VOB
  • Converting DVD recordings for legacy car entertainment systems requiring AVI
  • Building digital movie libraries from DVD collections in the traditional AVI/DivX format
  • Preparing DVD content for industrial monitoring systems that only accept AVI input

How It Works

FFmpeg reads the VOB program stream, deinterlaces MPEG-2, and transcodes to XviD (MPEG-4 ASP), DivX, MJPEG, or H.264 in the AVI container. Audio is transcoded from AC3/DTS to MP3 or PCM. DVD resolution (720x480/576) is maintained or adjusted. The AVI index is written at the end for seeking support. Deinterlacing via yadif is essential since AVI players display progressive frames.

Quality & Performance

XviD/DivX at 1500-2000 kbps produces good quality at DVD resolution — comparable to the MPEG-2 source at similar bitrates. MJPEG produces larger files but maximum compatibility. H.264 in AVI offers the best quality but limited legacy player support.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Always deinterlace when converting from VOB — DVD content is interlaced and will show combing in AVI players
  • 2Use XviD at 1500-2000 kbps for good quality at DVD resolution that plays on most AVI-compatible devices
  • 3Convert audio to MP3 at 192 kbps for good quality with minimal overhead in the AVI container
  • 4Select the desired audio track by stream index for multi-language DVDs before conversion
  • 5For VirtualDub editing, MJPEG codec provides the best frame-level editing experience

الأسئلة الشائعة

XviD for good compression and broad compatibility. MJPEG for VirtualDub and industrial tools. H.264 for best quality if your player supports it in AVI.
No. AVI is a simple linear container with no menu or navigation support. Only the video and audio content transfers.
AVI has very limited subtitle support. DVD bitmap subtitles will not transfer. Burn subtitles into the video during conversion if needed.
At comparable quality, AVI with XviD is typically 50-70% the size of the MPEG-2 VOB due to better codec efficiency.
Yes, when configured. DVDs are interlaced; AVI targets progressive displays. Always enable deinterlacing for proper display.
